Proverbs - Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 of Proverbs!  Like Job, this book focuses on wisdom and wise living.  As you begin reading, you will notice that chapters 1-9 are different in style than chapters 10-11.  The first nine chapters develop the theme and importance of wisdom.  If you're not convinced of the need for wisdom and wise living, why would you pay attention to the upcoming proverbs?  Beginning in chapter 10, we encounter the proverbs of Solomon: short statements (couplets) where the second line essentially restates the first line.

This can be difficult reading, especially if you're not much of a poet or enjoy reading poetry.  If you love poetry, you'll probably read these chapters multiple times!

Take some time to reflect on all the proverbs.  As with all poetry, there are meanings on multiple levels.  What is God speaking to you through these chapters?

Enjoy your reading!  Please share your reflections and questions.  Be sure to use the guiding questions as you read.

Our guiding questions are these:
  • What stood out to you in the reading?
  • Was there anything confusing or troubling?
  • Did anything make you think differently about God?
  • How might what you read change the way you live?
